Brandon Johnson

Brandon P. Johnson is the Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Conducting and Voice at the Greatbatch School of Music, Houghton College. He heads the Houghton College choral program, and administers the masters of music degree in choral conducting. In 2009 Johnson was the recipient of the Houghton College Award for Teaching Excellence.

Johnson is a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota and has received graduate instruction from the Eastman School of Music, Westminster Choir College, and the University of Arizona, where he received Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Choral Conducting. Johnson has studied with many of the preeminent choral artists of this generation including: Bruce Chamberlain, René Clausen, Daniel Moe, and Maurice Skones. He served as interim director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus and was selected to conduct the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra as a member of the Eastman conducting institute. Most recently Johnson studied conducting with German conductor Helmuth Rilling and was selected to conduct the Grammy winning Oregon Bach Festival Chorus and Orchestra.

An emerging voice in the choral world Johnson has presented conducting master-classes or choral literature sessions at multiple state MENC and ACDA conventions. Choirs under his direction have been invited to sing for several American Choral Director Association (ACDA) and the National Association of Music Education (MENC) conventions, including the 2009 MENC Eastern Division Convention in Providence, RI. Johnson is active in the New York chapter of the American Choral Director Association having served in several positions on its executive board and is currently the president-elect.

As a guest artist, Johnson has been invited to conduct collegiate, high school and middle school festivals around the country. He has worked with singers ranging from the professional symphonic chorus to musicians with extremely limited experience. Johnson delights in this work and welcomes the opportunity to develop singers of all ages and various musical backgrounds.
